특별한 용법이나 주의할 사항 (1)

1. check the condition 상태를 점검하다

condition처럼 목적어가 점검 대상이 될 때에는 전치사 없이 쓰인다. check for the leaks처럼 ‘~을 찾으려고 점검하다’일 때는 전치사 for를 슨다.

You should check for(->check) the condition of your car's engine on a regular basis.

2. be related to each other 서로 연결되어 있다

be related to는 ‘~에 이어져 있다. 연결되어 있다’는 의미의 덩어리 표현으로 외우면 좋다. each other는 우리말 해석 때문에 부사로 착각하기 쉽지만 사실은 대명사란 점도 알아두자.

Although each body system has difficult functions, all are related each(->related to each) other.

3. deal with a problem 문제를 처리하다

deal이 ‘나누어주다’의 의미가 아니라 ‘다루다, 처리하다’의 의미로 쓰일 때는 자동사로서 전치사 with와 같이 사용된다.

The damages should be dealt(->dealt with) without any support from the headquarters.

4. on the recommendation of ~의 추천으로

전치사 on은 동명사 또는 동작을 나타내는 명사와 함께 쓰여 ‘~와 동시에, ~한 바로 뒤에’의 의미로 쓰인다. 전치사 on대신 following을 써서 following the recommendation of로 쓰기도 한다.

I had an operation in(->on) the recommendation of my doctor.
